Who We Are

Highly motivated volunteers

Origins/history

The International Association of Lions Clubs began as the dream of Chicago businessman Melvin Jones.
He believed that local business clubs should expand their horizons from purely professional concerns to the betterment of their communities and the world at large.
An organizational meeting was held on June 7, 1917 in Chicago, Illinois, USA.
The new group took the name of one of the invited groups, the "Association of Lions Clubs".

Just three years after its formation, the association became International when the first club in Canada was established.
Major international expansion continued as clubs were established, particularly throughout Europe, Asia and Africa during the 1950s and 1960s.
Lions Clubs International has grown to include 1.4 million men and women in approximately 48,000 clubs located in 200 countries and geographic areas.

Mid Tyne Lions Club was formed in 1991 and became a Registered Charity in 2008.

The Club is part of Lions Clubs International District 105N which covers the
North East of England and Scotland.

Community Engagement

We actively engage with our local community through events, workshops, and initiatives that promote social involvement and inclusivity.

Areas of benefits
Lions clubs provide extensive opportunities for men and women to learn and grow while serving locally and internationally. Lions continue to address needs that are often unmet in Communities, such as • teaching life skills to school children. • building playgrounds and homes and supporting the elderly. • assisting the blind and visually impaired by providing preventative screenings, offering resources and equipment. • reaching out to youth through mentoring and educational programmes. • raising awareness of health care issues, such as diabetes, hearing loss and vision impairment. • providing disaster relief, including food, supplies and healthcare screenings. • work collectively and individually to build strong communities.

Charitable Initiatives

We organize and support various charitable initiatives that focus on important causes such as education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation.

Where We Are

Often considered to be the prettiest village on Tyneside, Ryton in the early 19th century was a popular residential area for wealthy Newcastle businessmen and merchants. Traditionally, Ryton’s economy was built on coal-mining and agriculture.
Today, the area is a largely affluent one, attracting city professionals who want the benefit of a rural retreat, but one that’s not too far from the thriving city center of Newcastle.
Set on a steep, richly wooded bank, seven miles west from Newcastle, the area is surrounded by magnificent countryside.
Since the mines closed in the early 1960s, the village has been well landscaped to accommodate light industries in a leafy and largely attractive setting. There are fine mansions set within wooded grounds, several handsome terraces and villas.
Ryton also benefits from good public transport links with a regular bus service to Crawcrook, Prudhoe and Hexham to the west and the Metro Centre, Gateshead and Newcastle to the east.

We offer a wide range of volunteer opportunities for individuals from all walks of life who want to make a difference and contribute to their community.
