Ryton Hirings
The Hirings at Ryton took place annually in May and November initially for farm and domestic workers seeking employment and attracted people from surrounding villages. The fair also provided sports and other attractions for the visitors.

Held around the Village Green and the Cross, the event was very popular and the nearby public houses gained a large amount of business!

The last Ryton Hirings was held in 1866 and as farm working became mechanised the need declined.

Over a hundred years later it was resurrected as Village Fair for a few years by the Ryton Heritage Group.

Three years ago in 2008, a team got together with the Mid Tyne Lions Club and started Ryton Hirings Revisited, the event being attractive to all ages providing a wide variety of stalls and free entertainment while raising funds for local needy causes.
